Week 6

Great night Wednesday night!  We had a lot of catching up to do.  Last weeks snow is finally melted, well almost.  We covered last weeks lesson as well as this weeks.  We missed a lot of you in class.  I sure don't want you to give up on this study, the running adventure, or yourself!  These last couple of weeks have been tough on all of us and on our running, but it's salvageable.  Pick up where you left off and carry on.  Everyone started so strong and I sure don't want you to give up now.  Go back to chapter 1 and read why you started this study.  Your desire is still there, I'm certain of it.  It's a new day and a new start.  Carry on.   You got this!

Well, I hope that encouragement worked!  I have a lot more if you need it... Text me! :)

Now on the flip side.... a lot of you  are hanging in there.  You're doing a great job! I'm so proud!  No snow or rain is gonna stop you.

In class we covered weeks 5 and 6 bible study.  The hay is in the barn.  This is a great quote.  A quote told to Mitchell our author just before one of his runs meaning there is nothing else you can do right now.  His race was the next day.  His work has been done now there is nothing more to do but execute on race day.  This is so true with our spiritual walk.  When a crisis comes is not the time to begin calling on God or trying to find a quick answer in his word.  Our heart is the barn and his word is the hay and we need to be storing up daily so we can be prepared with the trials do come.  Just as a farmer works all summer to grow, cut, bail and store the hay.  I'm sure there are a thousand other things he would rather be doing than work long hot summer days preparing for next winter but he does it anyway.  We are very busy people.  We have days so full of stuff, I don't know how we can attempt do get it all done let alone have 30 spare minutes to spend in God's word.  Well, I have never heard anyone say, I wish I would have spent "less" time in God's word.  Nope, never.  It actually sounds silly when I type it out but it's what we do every day if we are truly honest.   When a trial comes in our life we are going to want to call on him.  He will be there but it sure makes the trial easier when we have our barn already full of God's word and comfort.  I love the last paragraph in this chapter....  "Carve out the time. Make an investment.  Go deeper,  It might be the single most important decision you make.  When the strain comes, will you be able to draw on God's commands that were stored up months ago?  Start putting spiritual hay in the barn today.  Your tomorrow depends on it."   The last discussion question is... Why does your tomorrow depend on today?  Answer it!  Pray it!

This week was a short and to the point lesson... I actually took a different take on it than he did.  His ironman patch says "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand."  I can understand that somewhat. Not that I have ever done or desire to do an ironman,  my closest comparison is a half-marathon.  One of my driving factors that made me want to do it was the silly 13.1 on the back of my car.  I wanted it and had to complete the race to get it.  I feel our salvation should be displayed that way.  It should show in all we do.  A glow about us that makes others want to say, "I want what she/he's got."  Does you daily walk make people say what does she/he have that I don't?  It's JOY.  It's security as a believer.  It should be so evident that people want it too.  The discussion questions are about experiencing God.  Think of times you have experienced Him.  There is a great bible study called experiencing God.  In that study it tells us God is at work all around us, we just have to join him in it.  Every day!  Everyday. look around and say, where is he today and how can I join him?  He will show you in your quiet times. In your prayer times.  also, how can you help someone else experience God?

I pray you continue on in your bible study.  It only takes 6 weeks to form a habit.  We have completed 6 weeks.  Are you in a habit of quiet time.  How about your running?  Well, if not its OK you have 6 more weeks to go!  A second chance to get into the habit of spending time with God and a habit of running.

I'm going to send a second post later with the nutrition section we covered.

Now about our race:
We need people to sign up for our race!!!  We currently only have 10.  That is sad when we have 40 signed up in this class.  To be able to make any kind of profit for the fundraiser for missions we need at least 50.  I so don't want to have to call it off!!! We have all worked too hard.  SO with that said, if you are planning to participate, sign up!  Either on line or pick up a form from the church or contact me, I'll get you one.  I promise you will be glad you did.  Ask you friends to join us!  Remember its about outreach.  Surly there is someone God has put on your heart to reach out to.  What a fun day to invite them to

in Christ,
Donna

Week 5

Hi Runners,  I know this is very delayed! I really don't know what to write about because I was gone on a business trip last week.  I missed our special guest, Trina Abraham.  I hear she did a great job as I knew she would.  She is very knowledgeable about her work (physical therapist) and is a Godly woman.  You can't go wrong with that combo.

Last week I took on a new adventure in my job realm.  I was asked to be a special guest speaker at a dinner for a drug company.  It's a drug we use for our babies to help out premature lungs.  It's a drug I personally deliver and love the results so it should be something easy to do.  They have everything laid out for me. The PowerPoint was already made and they gave me the words to say all right there in front of me.  How hard can that be?  And even better, they made all the arrangements for me.  My flight, hotel, dinner, invitations to area hospital peers and physicians.   All I do is just show up.  Well the showing up became more of a task than the actual presentation.  After 7 hours of sitting in the Little Rock airport, on and off again 2 air crafts, and changing flights completely, I arrived in Chicago at 6 pm.  (the dinner started at 6).  The unexpected snow started in Chicago earlier that afternoon and was coming down quit hard. (6 inches by the next morning)  It didn't slow down the taxi drivers or any other driver for that matter,  We just went slipping and sliding across Chicago as if nothing was happening.  We arrived to a full restaurant.  (If that had been Arkansas, the restaurant would have been closed). Well, I could go on about other mishaps that could have and should have sent me over the edge but surprisingly enough it didn't.  I knew I had to hold it together if I was going to present a halfway decent presentation.  I presented and did an okay job for my first time.  I felt pretty good about it.  People actually asked questions and seemed interested.  I am female though and I am the type that needs to be told "good job".  I try not to be like that but I am what I am.  I was anxiously awaiting to see what the drug rep that set all this up would have to say.  It was he who would ask me to do it again.  Well I didn't get the response I was wanting.  He quickly pointed out my faults and gave me pointers on how to do it better next time.  (at least there will be a next time, I didn't do too bad).  When I got back to the hotel, I reflected on the whole day, the mishaps and how it all turned out and of those of you who know me well, I should have been a TOTAL mess.  Flustered and a jabbering mess.  But I wasn't, why not? Then I read our verses for the week.  Isaiah 40:31 came to complete light to me.  But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Wow. for the first time I understand that verse.  I was soring like the eagle.  God had me! That's why I didnt faint.  I don't know why I'm surprised.  I did pray about it, gave the whole trip to Him.  Though the storms were coming literally and figuratively.  I just let God carry me. He gave me opportunities to talk freely about Him.  I looked for Him in the midst of the storm and put my trust in Him.   It worked out and I get to do it again someday.

God is always there with us, we just have to trust Him to carry us.  Whether it's in our running program or sharing the gospel with that person beside us.  He will carry us through it.  Maybe it's a storm you think will never pass.  But, just like this stinking cold weather, it will pass and we will see His hand all over it.  What we have to do is LOOK for Him, TRUST Him, and be willing to speak boldly about Him.  We aren't perfect, I certainly didn't present a perfect presentation, but like our other verse said in Proverbs 24:16, For a righteous man may fall 7 times and rise again... You got this! You can get through the tough times if you allow God to carry you.  You can get through these runs.  You can find someone to share the gospel with.  How?  God with you, allowing Him total control.
I've been praying for all of you.  I can see you changing before my eyes!  You are allowing God control.  Carry on!

This week we will be talking about nutrition.  I've been searching for a nutritionist but no luck yet.  They are all busy.  But we will still have a good week.  Hope to see you there!  No stopping now!!

Continue to RUN!  We have 10 signed up for our race.  We need MORE!!

Week 4

Oh my this cold weather!  I'm actually very impressed how so many of you are either braving the cold running outside or finding a treadmill to run on.  This ice is a mess but don't get discouraged. You have started a great adventure and you will see it through to the finish line.  This seems to be just like our spiritual life doesn't it?  We are faced with things that distract us, get us off track but we can't just give up, give in.  We must complete the race set before us.

We didn't have as many at class this week as we have had.  I guess the weather has kept some away. I know some had to work extra to make up for snow days.  I want you to know you were missed!

We spent more time this week sharing and more time on our spiritual growth.  Our story this week was about Mitchell, the author of our study.  He was training for his first triathlon.  He asked for advise from friends and they told him, "Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Don't get stuck in to the pace of the rest of the racers.  Simply run YOUR race".  I know exactly what they are talking about.  Every race, there is a level of excitement that gets you all excited, heart pumping, Adrenalin flowing.  I feel it every time.  I have to remind my self literally continuously, "run my pace" but I never seem to listen.  At the Start, I'm off and running with the best of them, to only realized about a mile into it that there is no way I can keep up with them and will soon tire out.  I have to pull back, do a reality check, and run my pace, my race, what I trained for.  It's the same with with my spiritual walk.  We must do what God has called us to do, not what others are doing.  But we also can't stand on the sideline and watch everyone else run by and not do what God has called us to do.  If you have excepted Christ as your Savior then he has given you a spiritual gift.  A gift special for you to use to serve Him, reaching the lost for Him.  You are expected to use that gift.  Not put it away for safe keeping.  So many like to say, I don't know what it is.  Well, search within you, what do you love to do?  What are you passionate about?  God has probably given that passion to you.  It may be going on foreign mission trips (that's what he gave Tim & I) or working with children, the elderly, hosting events that reach the lost, maybe he's made you a great listener and you can be there for someone who needs a ear to hear their pain.  Whatever it is, God gave it to you to use.  Run with it.  Allow God to work through you to get it accomplished.  To the opposite extreme though don't do it to earn favor with God or with the world.  We can't earn God's favor.  It is a gift he has given us through grace.  It's not what we do, but what He alone can do in us and through us.

I hope you answered the discussion questions in the book this week, they are good questions.

Galatians 5:7  You were running well, who prevented you from obeying the truth?
Who or what is keeping you from staying focused on God and his plan for you?  A lot of times the answer to this question is ourselves.  We get caught up in what we think or feel instead of what God says. The only way to know for sure what is God's call is to be listening to Him.  Take your time in prayer and in His Word.  Allow Him!

Physically this week our focus was our stretching.  Dan shared with us some insight from a personal trainer he knows and pre-stretching isn't as important but that we need to "warm up" the muscles. That is done in our plan when we do that 5 minutes brisk walk to warm up.  Stretching after is good for releasing tight muscles.  I love when we can share what we learn along the way.  I know I'm not a trained person at all about the matter.  I'm just someone who loves to do it and am wanting to share what we all gain along the way.  Thanks Dan for your help!
As we start this week we are adding more time to the running portion so i wanted to share some more insight from my Non-runner marathon training book:  Running form.  Wow! everyone has different opinions about foot strike.  Last week Erin from Go Running! stressed the importance of mid foot strike and not heal, then this book and our book says heal strike.  My uneducated advise is if you have the "right" shoes then strike where is natural.  I feel if you try to change your natural strike you will mess up your form.  (That's my 2 cents worth).  One tip I did find very helpful for me was vertical bounce.  As you run, observe your bounce.  Don't over bounce.  Look out ahead of you, pick an object to watch.  Does it move up and down as you run?  If yes, then you have too much vertical bounce.  Try and focus on forward motion not up and down motion.   You will cover more ground with less energy burned.  Another wasted energy form is heel kicking.  You don't have to move your heels all the way up.  Your heels only need to come off the ground about 12 inches.  Upper body relaxing!  Think about relaxing your shoulders.  Your arm swing should not be a pumping motion but more gliding across in front of your body.  keep your arms at 45 degree angle or lower, not up high. Relax your hands, lightly touching finger tips to thumbs.  These are all things that keep you relaxed in the upper body.  If you're tense its waisted energy.

Concluding the week, be a positive thinker.  Time to say "I'm a Runner"  name it and claim it.  If your feet are out there hitting the pavement and "for a split second both feet are off the ground"(running definition we learned in week 1) then you are running!  It's more than you were doing 3 weeks ago! Be proud of that!  I'm proud!

You know at the beginning, I said no excuses!  Well, I have attached some pictures below that are circuit training exercises.  If you can't get out and you don't have access to a treadmill then these are great endurance training exercises.  Pick your level, do each one for 1 minute, rest 1 minute, then repeat 2-3 times. Have fun!

Sign up for our race.  It's on line or we have race entry forms.  Invite your family and friends to join us.  Registration does include a t-shirt.

Next week we have another speical guest.  Trina Abraham, an physical therapist and trainer from Searcy Athletic Club will be with us talking about running injuries and preveting injuries.  I hope everyone can come and make her feel welcome.

Thanks for all you're doing both physcally and spiritually!

Week 3

Well this is a bit late! I started writing it Wednesday night after church but I'm still learning how to use this website and completely lost everything I wrote. Well, needless to say, I quietly closed my laptop and went to bed. haha. 2 days later I found what I started. Here ya go...

Wow! What a fun night! Erin Taylor with Go Running! shoe store came and shared with us a wealth of information about picking out the correct shoes for our feet. She told us what types of shoes are available for different types of feet. She as so entergtic and fun! She can make anyone love running. She gave out door prizes, congrats to Stephanie, Drew, Amber, and  . She invited us to come to her store. They are open 10-6 Monday-Saturday. She shared that they will spend quality time with us, accessing our run, picking the proper shoe that best fits our feet. I encourage all of you, next time you are in Little Rock, swing by and check them out. They are located at 1819 North Grand St in the Heights.

Our 5K is official and ready for everyone to sign up. You can sign up either on a paper registraion form or on line at raceentry.com, via  a link on facebook, or soon on Temple's website, templebaptistsearcy.org.   I have created an event on facebook which has the link to make it easy for you to go straight to the registration on line. SHARE SHARE SHARE. That's probably the easiest and fastest way we can add participants to our race. The cost is $25. That includes a medal for all finishers and a race T shirt. After April 10 the price will go up to $30. There is a referral program set in place. Once you register and you get a conformation, there will be a referral link you can copy and share on any social media.  For every one of your referrals that registers you will receive a $5 refund. So if you have 5 referrals sign up then yours is free! This is a great way to "reach out" in our witnessing! If you have any questions about it, please call me!

We reviewed Week 2's daily "Get in the Word". I'm not going to repeat what's in you book but I do want to reinforce the key points. "Are you someone special?" Can others look at you and know you have something special, someone special, Jesus. We should all be striving to obtain the prize set before us. We should continually be running the race (serving God) as if we are going to win because you know, we are going to win the prize, incuruptable prize... eternal life with our Lord and Savior. Live your life so you can say at the end, "I fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." What distracts you from doing what God is calling you to do? Who can help you stay on track? These are all things we need to truly think about, pray about, and have an answer.

Here is a link to a video offered by RFG if you don't have a special guest come to talk about shoes. It's about 30 minutes long but very informative. Hope it helps.

Week 2 class review

This week is about continuing your routine.  How did you do last week?  Did you get in all  3 workouts?  So many did and I'm so proud.  You are really showing you CAN!  I know some of you are saying to yourself, "I am really busy, I can't find the time".  Well I found a very good commercial for Run for God that I showed, here it is, go ahead and watch it:  https://vimeo.com/51210596 .  Do you run to embrace your day?  What a great way to connect with God.  Talk to Him about your day, give your cares and worries to Him.  30 minutes is all it takes.  Now it's time to add in our bible study, adding to our routine.  Just  30 minutes to spend in His word, reading and praying.

The bible studies each week are not too long but are powerful.  There is a story that starts out the week followed by "Get in the Word".  One for each run day. Three for the week.  Spend quality time with God. Reflect on what he is saying to you.  Pray about it.   Memorize one of the verses of the week.  Recite it while your running.  Listen to what he is trying to teach you.  This is a great time to start a journal.  What a great way to write your prayers and later see where God worked through those times and answered your prayers.  Sometimes we don't see the answers while we are in it but can look back and see God all over the pages.  We will come back next week and review the discussion questions and discuss what we have learned from God throughout the week.  If you are our virtual participants, feel free to comment here at the bottom what God has shown you.  We would love to hear from you,

Last week I shared from a book I got while I was training for my first half marathon.  Its called "Non-Runners marathon trainer" by David Whitsett. Within that book it talks about  internal and external Lotus of Control.  I'm not very knowledgeable with it comes to how our brain works. I'm more a heart and lung person, but I found this very interesting and found it to work while I ran,  It talks about "If you  believe you are mostly in control of the events in your life then you have an internal locus of control.   If you tend to believe your life is controlled by an external force then you have external locus of control."  (hang with me, there is a point to this).  "It doesn't matter if the events in your life  you are really in control but that you think you are in control"  "When it comes to training for running, it's good to adapt an internal lotus of control because you are going to need a lot of determination and motivation to get the job done.  You will start working on convincing yourself you can do it.  See yourself doing it.  Believe in yourself that you can.  With all that said, what I'm trying to get across it that running is mostly mental,  You have to believe you can and you will.  It's all in the attitude.  You can do anything you set your mind to do.

This week we talked about our locus  of control is about negative attitude.  I quote from the book again,  "Trying to do this with a negative attitude is like trying to run with a lead coat and shackles on your feet.  You won't make it and will be so exhausted from the effort that it won't be worth it"   You must believe you can and embrace it.

This weeks lesson on running is about equipment,  I'll not rehash our discussion about that because it's in your book.  I did add in spiritual equipment as well though.  We can't overlook being prepared with spiritual equipment as well. A bible and a journal.  A good bible devotionals for once this class is over or a good in depth bible study with a group is a great way to stay in God's word.  Our church offers men's and women's bible studies on an ongoing bases.  I also handed out the running tract. Tracts are a great tool to aide in sharing the gospel.  I'll get everyone a copy.  I challenge you to learn this tract and share the tract.  Remember our spiritual goal is to share the gospel with at least one person.
Then there are apps, a great tool both for running and quiet time with God and bible study.  If you have any questions about any, let me know and I'll try and hook you up with some.

Lastly, we chose prayer partners and I don't want you to miss out on this.  I will be getting with you to share who your prayer partner will be.  It will be such a great time to encourage each other and get to know each other on a more spiritual level.

Keep up the good work.  Continue your routine.  Remember your goals! Press on towards the goal that God has laid before us.
