week 1 - First Night success

Wow! What a great first night! Everyone is excited and ready to get started. We started out the night watching a very inspirational video of Rick Hoyt. You can watch it as well on youtube. Search "True story of a father's love: Team Hoyt click here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgbbdHNUr9M. Very worth your time. You CAN do this!is the message I want you to embrace and believe. We are all in this together to support each other, encourage each other, and pray for each other.

I have either mailed your book to you or will be delivering it to you within a day or two. When you get it, first thing to do is answer the question "why are you reading this book/ doing this class?" Be honest, it's your answer. Write it down. You may need to refer back to it from time to time to remind yourself why you're doing this.

We reviewed week 1, discussed what we expect to accomplish during these 12 weeks. We are going to strengthen ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. Homework this week for everyone is to read week one. There is a lot of important information. The whys and the hows of this program. There isn't any bible study this week. That will begin next week.

Run for God has an app if you have a smart phone. It is called "Run for God 5K challenge" it is $2.99 but worth it. It's not necessary but a benefit.

During these 12 weeks we are going to learn how to share the gospel along with learning how to accomplish a 5k. Our goals we want to accomplish are 2 fold: 1. Physically- complete a 5K set for April 25th and establish a healthy habit of being fit 2. Spiritually - establish a routine quiet time with God and share Jesus with at least one person.

There is one thing that I feel is very important about beginning your training that is not covered in week 1 and that is pacing yourself. It is important to walk/run quick enough to get your heart rate in an aerobic rate to burn calories and condition/strengthen your heart but not so fast that it puts your heart into thinking it's in crisis and in turn stores fat. To know that magic range you can do it 1 of 2 ways. One way is to actually measure your heart rate while running. This would require a heart rate monitor. You DO NOT have to go get one! I do want to share how to figure out your target heart rate just so you know in case you have a means of checking it or want to check your own pulse. First subtract your age from 220. This will give you your 100% maximum heart rate. Then with that number, figure out 70% and 80% or your maximum heart rate. This is your optimal target heart rate range(aerobic). The second option for monitoring this range without a heart rate monitor is called RPE (rate of perceived exertion), the talking test. You should maintain a pace that allows you to talk but in small conversations, phrases. If you can talk continuously without breathing hard, you aren't walking/running fast enough. If you can only speak a couple words and have to catch your breath, you are walking/running too fast. As time goes on, you will be able to go faster because your heart will become more conditioned. A good test is the pledge of allegiance. Your walking should be at the 70% range or 4-6 RPE and the jogging portion should be 80% or 7. With all this said, everyone should consult your physician if you have any concerns. Let him know what you are planning to do.

I am so excited you have decided to do this with us at Temple Baptist. We have 42 currently enrolled. That is 42 potential believers reached with the gospel!! That's 42 wanting to make a difference in their physical and spiritual life!! I'm praying for each of you and am here for you if you have any questions or concerns. I always say the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. If I don't know the answer, I find it out.

 God Bless!!! Donna
